If you listen to KXRT, our little internet radio operation, you’re in for a big treat! No tricks! Coming October 31st to KXRT it’s the Big Halloween Broadcast 2009!

All day we will be playing great Halloween music, ghost stories and more. At 6pm, we will be playing 100% Spooky Sound Effects to set the mood for the evening. Then at 7pm, we go 100% Live! We’ll have our USTREAM.tv video feed up and running and will start taking your calls. We would like to hear your Halloween stories and your scary ghost stories. We’ll also talk about your best or worst costumes you’ve worn or have seen. You can also wish your friends and family a Happy Halloween, live on the air! Finally, at 8pm, we will play the entire original 1938 Mercury Theatre production of The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles!

I don’t get it! In my life, I’ve learned a very simple truth: if you want time to go fast, it creeps along; if you want time to be slow, it just zips past you like you’re standing still!

Here we are in the middle of October, in 2009! In just a matter of weeks, it will be a whole new decade! It blows my mind. I still remember thinking the 90’s were cool! Then I really remember the whole Y2K phenomena where the digital world would screech to a halt at the stroke of midnight. Planes were going to fall from the sky, satellites would fly out of their orbits, all communication would be muted because some short-sighted programmers didn’t use a four digit year code.

Of course, it turned out to be pretty anti-climatic. Either companies and governments (who spent millions) were saved by last-minute preparations, or maybe it wasn’t a big deal. But here we are, nearly 10 years later. Oh yeah, you can’t forget September in 2001. A huge life and world-changing event. (Where are those fancy new towers??) This decade has been historic in a lot of senses. The Y2K business, the 9/11 tragedy, Shock & Awe, Hurricanes, Tsunamis, the first black US President… You know that song from 1989 by Billy Joel, “We Didn’t Start The Fire”?? That song was about 4 minutes long and covered events from almost 90 years of history. Someone could easily write a new version that just covers the first 10 years of the 21st Century and have each event be entirely familiar!

Soon, we have this year’s version of “The Holidays”. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A triumvirate of Holidays based on eating, eating and gifts (and eating!). Don’t get me wrong, I love the Holidays! How awesome to see people scare each other and earn candy by doing so. Wyatt is so excited to dress in his new costume and while we encourage him to keep it a secret, he wants to shout it to the world!

My sweet Mother will be coming into town this year for Thanksgiving.  Thanks to some exceptional deals, she was able to score some great plane tickets for the trip. This will be a first. I’m really pleased that she’ll be here to share with us. Plus she gets to add her outstanding cooking abilities to Rachel’s already masterful talents in the kitchen. Per tradition, we go out on the day after to cut down a fresh, live Christmas Tree from one of the local farms. This was new for me 8+ years ago when I married Rachel and will be new for Mom as well. She’ll be around for a week and be a huge help and great company!

Christmas should be pretty typical. After both Wyatt’s and Rachel’s birthdays in the preceding weeks, Christmas starts becoming a little taxing. Again, there’s nothing but pure joy and anticipation surrounding the great Holiday. But when you read the previous paragraphs and then take into account that a few days later there will be another big celebration to welcome in a new year AND a new decade… You see where taxing may not be the most expressive word to use. By far Wyatt’s favorite Holiday is Christmas. Rightly so and I fully agree! To look around at the faces you know and adore and see them just light up in pure joy and gratitude is enough to warm and sometimes melt your heart. It is even enough of a distraction that for some brief seconds you don’t even think about the financial aspects of the day. In my book, that cannot be bad.

As of this writing, there are 71 Days, 16 Hours, 47 Minutes until Christmas. (Google or Bing “days till Christmas”) Rachel and I have found and commented that with Woot, 1SaleADay and other bargain sites, it’s become easier to shop for Christmas and get some great deals. Rachel even said we might get our shopping done before December! One other bit of shopping advice: if you shop at Costco or Sam’s Club and you see something that will make a great gift, BUY IT RIGHT THEN! I can almost guarantee that it will not be there the next time you go. Things cycle through so quickly and we’ve kicked our collective selves many a time for errantly thinking that item would be there in a couple weeks, much less a couple days.

Disney @ Halloween

We were invited to join Dave, April, Ian, Debs and Jake at Disneyland to help celebrate Ian’s 4th birthday and a belated wedding celebration for Debs and Jake.

We had already been to Disneyland earlier this year in February as a treat from my Mom, who was having a birthday and wanted to treat us. People looked at us and scoffed wondering how we could be so rich to afford going twice. We really didn’t pay for the first time.

We were able to get really good tickets at Dream Vacation Builders. They were 5 day Park Hopper tickets at the price of 3 day tickets and they were even discounted further. We stayed 4 days and had a blast the entire time!

Blue Bayou Restaurant

For Ian’s birthday, we had reservations for the Blue Bayou restaurant, inside Pirates of the Caribbean! It was incredible with the exception of some really exorbitant prices. It was a fun experience!

We met up with Adria and her 4 children, Sam, Sarah, Griffin and Caleb. They live close by and Sam and Sarah are our nephew and niece. At one point, our group got as large as 12! While quite the party, it was tough to manage. It was really good to see folks again, though.

The weather was perfect. Cool and clear. Although at the top of the giant ferris wheel in California Adventure, it was quite cool and windy.

Space Mountain is Ghost Galaxy

We pretty much were able to ride all the rides at least once and some even 3 or more times, like Space Mountain and Soarin’ Over California. Both parks had their Halloween decorations up and a number of the rides were even customized for the season. Space Mountain was transformed into Ghost Galaxy with a creepy ghoul that chased you through the ride and would reach out and grab you! Haunted Mansion was all decked out in Nightmare Before Christmas fare. Jack Skellington and his friends were all over this one! It was very cool.

They had a nightly fireworks and media display timed to some haunting songs and Disney villains. This was a lot of fun and very well done.

Thanks again for the invite and it was an excellent experience and one for the memory banks!

TOAST Toast

Hello. I want to share with you all what a great weekend we had. I was on-call all this past week which meant I worked in the office from 2pm – 10pm and then had the mobile phone and laptop at home if anyone needed help overnights through 5am. On Fridays I work 1pm-9pm and then I’m free. During the days last week, I was able to open the mic on my internet radio station, KXRT, and do some basic DJing. It was a lot of fun and I really like doing it.

On Saturday, we hooked up with the Baileys and headed to the Utah State Fair. The morning wasn’t too bad but by the time 1pm came around, the temps blasted up into the mid to high 90’s! We let Wyatt and Sydnee ride a few kiddie rides and looked at some exhibits. We wrapped up and headed out around 4pm. We helped them transport their new 2-seater baby stroller from Babies R Us. No, they’re not having twins, but Sydnee will be able to ride as well.

Around 7:45pm, I head to the state-of-the-art all-digital KXRT Studios high above town in the all-new SuiteSounds Entertainment complex, on the 33rd floor. (yeah, but it sounded good when I was typing) The 2nd Timmy LIVE! show was on the air at 8pm sharp.

I played the night’s Timmy LIVE! Top 5 countdown show and then went into our Featured Artist: Matchbox 20. The show was moving along really well and I had some requests come in through Facebook and some of you even called our request lines and got on the air with me. It was an excellent time to be had! I really enjoyed myself. If any of you have known me, you know that I am best in my element when I am entertaining.

Years ago, I would DJ church dances and will always remember those happy times. There’s something powerful about music that brings people together. I get energized and feel honored to be able to present music and entertainment to people. I think that’s why I’ve always dreamed of having a job in the radio industry as an on-air DJ or host. To be behind a microphone that can send a signal to potential hundreds of thousands of people just gets my heart pounding. My internet station is small and will most likely always be, unless something major happens in congress and the recording industry. I’m entirely happy with the way it is. Yes, I want more listeners and new social networking tools like Twitter and Facebook have really brought things along more than I’ve ever seen.

My youngest brother, Chas has his birthday today (9/21). He is currently serving the Lord in Cleveland, OH. (Heaven knows they need it! ) He is turning 22 this year. I’ve always thought having a sibling 11 years my junior was very interesting. He is so different from his older siblings. My parents took a vastly different approach to his discipline and upbringing. I won’t get into all that but it’s enough to say that he has his different traits and motivations. I love him and I know he is doing the Lord’s work. His efforts will bless the lives of many people, his own included. He should return home in early February of next year. We are all excited and will travel some distances to see him home.

My 33rd birthday is Thursday (9/24). 33 is an interesting age. Nothing horribly special, other than it being two numbers that are the same. It’s another year older. For the next 3 months or so, I get to be 2 years older than Rachel. She loves that. I’m not really worried or depressed about my age. When it starts heading into the upper 30’s I will probably start being more hesitant of getting excited about my age. But I figure I’ve got a few more years before all that happens. No hurry!

Apple recently released their new iPod Nano line. This one has 2 big new features: A video camera and an FM Radio. I’m really excited about the FM radio feature. Not only can you tune in your favorite local shows but you can use it like a Tivo! You can pause and rewind live radio. It also features iTunes song-tagging so you can queue up a wish-list in iTunes to download later. The radio station has to provide that support on their end.

It’s available now in a plethora of brilliant colors and in 8gb and 16gb sizes. Suggested retail for 8gb is $149 and $179 for 16gb.

To sum it up: my birthday is on the 24th of this month.
