A new car…

2008 CivicTroops… It is getting to be within a year when my lease on my 2004 Nissan Altima is up. As you might know, leasing cars is an alternate method to car “ownership”. It’s kinda like going into Blockbuster and renting a DVD for 3 years and then taking it back for a new one. Sure, you can buy this DVD at the end for what they estimate it will be worth after depreciation. There are limitations. You cannot watch this DVD more than say 12 or 15 times a year. If you watch it more than that, Blockbuster charges you a certain amount per view that is over the limit originally negotiated. If you scratch or damage the DVD more than is normal wear and tear, they will charge you for that as well. Nice thing about this deal is you get the option to purchase as I mentioned, or you can just grab the next DVD and move along for the next few years, or you can walk away clean and free.

Ok, let’s take our conversation out of the DVD store and into the car dealership…

I think we’ve pretty well decided to just turn in the Altima and walk out. We are considering some options including not having a second car for a while and saving some money. This depends on Rachel’s job situation at that time. If she’s working, we’ll most likely need another car. This brings us to the real topic. I am looking at a few different models with some criteria in mind. They are: economy, style, performance and utility. As far as economy goes, the main concern is more on the actual monthly payments, they need to be less than what we are currently paying. Style is pretty important to me, it should look like a cool car, a fun car. Performance leans a lot on Economy. Finally, I am considering whether I want a car or a pickup truck. Following is a short list of the new cars I am looking at seriously, in no order. All are 4-door and current model year.

There are others, but these are the top five. What I would like to get from you all is your opinions. Are these good cars? If you had the choice, what would you drive? Buy or Lease? Do you have one? Have a ball with this one!

  2. Personally, I never would recommend leasing a vehicle; you may as well go over to Hertz and rent a car there for an extended period of time as you’re doing the same thing with your money. As for your next vehicle purchase, go for the pick-up as you’ll get many benefits from having it, including pulling that travel trailer someday 🙂 Consider a pick-up with a roomy extended cab so you’re child and future children will have plenty of leg space, as well as any adult passengers you pick up along the way.
