We have talked on and off for years about getting a family pet. I grew up with cats and a dog and really have a love for them. With Rachel and Wyatt’s allergies, that hasn’t been an option. Back when Wyatt was real little we had a kitten, Marble. We had him for about 3 days. All the puffy eyes and sinus inflammation was too much for both of them. We gave him to someone who I’m sure enjoys him. Since then, our pet situation has consisted of a fish.
We recently saw Marley & Me and through some further discussion with friends, we’ve come to decide that it’s now the right time for us to get a dog. After some research, we’ve decided to be unoriginal and find a Yellow Lab, just like Marley. I’ve never been a fan of small, designer dogs. In my opinion, a dog has to be a dog. At least up to my knees and big enough to wrestle around with.
We looked through some websites for adoption and some animal rescues and shelters but couldn’t really find what we wanted. We also looked into some professional breeders and for $1,000 or more, we could get a well-papered and thoroughbred stallion of a Lab. We ended up finding someone who just had a litter of purebred Labs a day ago. They had some Black, some Yellow and a Chocolate. We drove the few miles to go look at them last night and decided on a Yellow female. They were all so small and at this age, you can’t really tell personality. We wrote the seller a check (for much less than $1,000!) and told her which one we wanted and she said we could pick her up in six weeks. She also said we can come visit as she grows.
We are really excited! This new venture will be a huge success! Wyatt will relax his fears of dogs as he grows up with her. This has been one concern of ours. We don’t know why he is so afraid. He’s never been attacked or bitten or even scratched by a dog. We’ve not watched Cujo with him. Maybe he’s not comfortable with some small being that moves and acts on it’s own. Maybe in his mind, he categorizes it as a toy and he knows that he has to act upon them to get them to move. Who knows? We hope this will bring him around and help him develop a deep love and respect of dogs.
I wasn’t able to snap any pics since I thought the flash would spook the mom or the pups. As time goes on I’m positive we’ll get more pictures.
