KXRT Radio – Are YOU Listening?

Folks, I know this is just self-serving, shameless promotion. I know. So, what?

You may know that I am an owner and operator of a full-service 24 hour internet radio station. KXRT is one of my passions and if you ask my wife or son, they might use stronger language. I love all things radio and am always looking for the next opportunity to get involved. In the mid-90’s I got a teenager’s dream of working part-time at a real radio station. Sure, the station was a joke and had no direction and died shortly. But I LOVED every minute of it! Being behind that microphone and not knowing how many people might hear my voice was completely intoxicating. Soon, I was faced with reality when I had to actually make some money. Since then, it’s been a dream. I can now realize this dream from my house and have complete control over how it’s done.

KXRT means nothing as far as an acronym or abbreviation. I just put the letters together in my mind and they sounded exciting and dynamic. At the time, I did an internet search to find out if there already was a KXRT, I couldn’t find any. That was that, KXRT was born. Previously, I’ve used other names but they were temporary and pretty weak, really. I set about getting things started. I created a website, a Facebook Page, getting a radio buddy of mine to make some station IDs and promos, and tons of other stuff. The first computer that ran KXRT was a Pentium 3, 1ghz with 256mb ram and a 30gb drive. Through time, we went to a Pentium 4 1.8ghz with 512mb ram, a P4 2.6ghz with 512mb ram, a P4 2.8ghz (with hyperthreading!) with 768mb ram, and is now on a Pentium D 2.8ghz server with 4gb Ram and 500gb drive!

For most of its life, KXRT was running along with the risk of getting fined for playing music that isn’t covered by royalties and other fees. Last month, we finally licensed it and now is totally covered! The fact that it wasn’t totally covered kept me from really promoting it. Now I’m beginning to work on setting up promotional partnerships with small businesses. I’m not really focused on making money at this point. What I’d like to accomplish is having these partnerships benefit both parties. I can gain listeners by offering incentives and the business gets people in their doors and name exposure. If you would be interested in being a promotional partner, email me at

Recently, we’ve added a new themed music day, Nuclear 90’s. It features all the pop, rock, hip-hop and grunge from the decade that brought us dot coms and Lewinsky’s! As always, commercial-free and NO REPEATS! We hope you enjoy!

Perhaps I should explain…

Hi, friends! I just wanted to take a quick moment to give you a little insight into what KXRT and the Timmy LIVE! Show are all about. If you’ve known me much at all, you’d know that I have a lot of interest and desire to work in radio. I got the bug way early in my childhood when listening to the DJs spin the hits in the 80’s up in Washington. It was something I wanted to do and as soon as my dad bought me my first dual-deck portable stereo (read: boombox), I was creating my own radio station in my bedroom! As I grew and my interests developed and my ability to drive around improved, I found a small AM radio station nearby. I started hanging out with the DJs there. I started to really see how radio worked. I hung around enough and actually got on the payroll. I started by recording commercials from reel-to-reel tape to their tape cartridges to play on-air. Then I was able to provide fill-in and some basic operating roles. I ran the board for local high school sports games. I was so excited. Then I ended up getting into some trouble as I got caught being on the air after-hours and was let go. Continue reading “Perhaps I should explain…”

Timmy LIVE!

UPDATE: This first show will happen as scheduled. Following shows will happen on a bi-weekly basis.

The Internet Radio arm of SuiteSounds Entertainment, Inc., KXRT, is launching our newest feature this weekend. Timmy LIVE! As the title declares, this will be a 2 hour feature each week broadcast live from our studios near Salt Lake City, UT. Our team of radio programmers and engineers have spent a good part of 2009 adjusting and perfecting the sound of KXRT. The tagline, 100% Hits – 100% Fun! is just what this new live show is all about.

Each Saturday night at 8pm, we will present a variety show with a live host to bring you all through the different features. First is a secret feature that will be revealed on the show. Next we will have a featured artist that we will have facts, information and sometimes an interview to spotlight throughout the rest of the show. We will play plenty of great hit music from our vast library of hits and we will have the freedom to play songs not typically played day to day. We will also have a live call-in segment with a topical discussion! Our Voicemail line 801-788-4916 will be turned on for your calls!

We hope you will listen! The first show is this Saturday at 8am (mountain time). Following shows will be on Saturdays at 8pm.

Shameless Plug – The New KXRT

I’ve mentioned this a lot and since it’s my blog, I wanted to mention it again. Plus, I wanted to promote the upcoming 24/7 Christmas Music Extravaganza that is coming very soon to The New KXRT. Each Christmas Season, we change the music library from the best hits of the past 30 years to the best Christmas Music – Ever!

Starting midnight on the day after Thanksgiving, you will start hearing your favorite Christmas Music! Not only will you hear those tradtional favorites from Celine Dion, Amy Grant, Josh Groban, Garth Brooks and more, but you will also hear some lesser-known artists singing some favorites and their original songs. We have some local artists from Utah and Washington States. We have some classical performances that you normally wouldn’t hear on “your official Christmas blah blah blah” radio stations. And, as always, its commerical free and has minimal interruptions.

I am excited, as I am each year, to bring this music to your computers. You can feel safe leaving it on around the kids and in your office. Tell your friends, family and co-workers. Starting Friday, November 28th at midnight. The 24/7 Christmas Music Extravaganza!

How can you listen? You need a couple things. First, go get a free music player called Winamp. Install that in your Windows PC and you can listen immediately. Second, you need an internet connection. (maybe that should be reversed… oh well) If you run something other than Windows, there might be something we can do. Let me know.

To play the station, point your browser to and on that page there are several Listen Live links. One on top and one on the right hand column. Click that and it should prompt you to open or save, click open and Winamp should start playing the station within seconds. If you run into trouble, let me know right away!

I hope you take some time to check us out! The station is currently playing the best Country, Pop, Rock and R&B from the past 30 years. Feel free to tune in starting today!

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Internet Radio Updates

Hey friends! If you don’t already know, I operate a small internet radio station. I program the music and produce segments and occasionally pop in to host a live show. I say small because that’s how I like it, that’s what I can afford and it’s just fun! I make no money from it and don’t plan to. This is great because there is no advertising – on-air or otherwise.

KXRT is the name of the station. The call letters don’t mean anything. I just thought they sound good together. It is my understanding that there is a real FM radio station in Chicago called WXRT. I was unaware of this when choosing my name. It shouldn’t matter really. KXRT plays an interesting variety of music. Based on a Country music format, we play mostly songs from the last 15 years and a few classics. We also play some of the greatest rock and pop hits from the late 70’s through today. I am currently running through the catalog of music and cleaning it up and making sure all the music is tagged and organized correctly. As I do this, you will notice more music variety. I also play some songs that were never hits or have never been played on the radio that I think could have been hits.

You’ll hear all the hits and even some songs that sound great, but aren’t familiar. I am really excited to grow this station into something enjoyable and entertaining. There are some requirements. For Windows PCs, you will need a free media player called Winamp. For Linux, there is a similar player called XMMS. I am unsure of a Mac compatable player as of now. I am sure there is one that will play the stream. Most other players, Like Windows Media Player, RealAudio and iTunes cannot play my station. This is due to the fact that I stream the station in high efficiency AAC+. I am aware of a plugin that will work with Windows Media Player, but as of yet, the others cannot. I chose this format due to it’s highly efficient transmission. Most MP3 streams that claim CD quality are streaming at least 128kbps. At just 48kbps, AAC+ is technically better-than-CD quality. I don’t know how they can claim that as all my music has come from CDs directly or music download services. But I digress…

I hear that Apple will soon include an AAC+ codec that will play streams like mine and many others. I have started a blog at this LINK. Head over there and start keeping informed. I have also started a Twitter account. it’s at this LINK. Follow us! A Facebook account and perhaps a MySpace account is forthcoming. We will do our best to keep you informed and up to date. Also, we encourage your feedback and help. Let’s grow this together! For more information, head to the blog! Start listening today!
